NovikShake RS8 RoughSawn 8 ft Shake

NovikShake RS8 is a rough-sawn faux cedar shake siding panel that runs a full 8 ft. Each piece lays one course, 95.3 in. long with a 6.6 in. exposure, so long walls and gables go up with fewer pieces. About NovikShake RS8 RoughSawn 8 ft Shake

NovikShake RS8 is a rough-sawn faux cedar shake siding panel that runs a full 8 ft. Each piece lays one course, 95.3 in. long with a 6.6 in. exposure, so long walls and gables go up with fewer pieces. It is also the NovikShake profile offered in the StainNatural colours, five deep stained-cedar finishes, alongside Blended and Solid colours.

The RS8 name trips people up: the 8 means 8 feet, not 8 inches. Novik calls it the RoughSawn 8' Shake, an oversized panel with the coarse, saw-marked face of rough-sawn cedar. Where a perfection shake looks crisp and uniform, RS8 is meant to look like real cedar that came off the saw, which suits cottages, gable ends and older homes getting new cladding.

Each panel shows 95.3 in. by 6.6 in. on the wall, and a box of 22 panels covers about 96.4 sq. ft. The colour range is wider than most shake profiles. StainNatural comes in Ebony, Oak, Sequoia, Teak and Walnut, a stained-cedar look Novik offers only on this profile. There are also Blended colours such as Cedar Blend, Weathered Blend and Canyon Blend, and Solid colours from White to Windsor Blue.

The 8 ft length changes the install. Each full panel takes at least 7 nails: the centre hole, both ends and four more in the nailing channel, no more than 16 in. apart, with 1/16 in. left under each head. Thermal setting differs from other Novik panels. Above 20°C, slide to the stopper. From 0 to 20°C, use the temperature line. Below 0°C, go 1/16 in. right of that line. Trim needs a 1 in. opening, and Novik warns against lining up joints or stair-stepping them from row to row.

RS8 is polypropylene, evaluated under CCMC 13420-R, and can sit right against a roofline. Do not paint it or pressure wash it. Novik's Limited Lifetime Warranty covers individual owners. Send us your wall and gable sizes and we will price panels, corners and starter strip.

Installation Guide

  1. Preparation: start at the lowest point of the structure and work left to right. Install Universal Starter Strips level and square. Polymer strip: leave 5/8" (1.59 cm) above a floor, or install flush with the wall base if there is no floor; Pro Series strip: top set 2-1/2" (6.35 cm) above the floor. Leave a 1" (2.54 cm) gap at each wall end when using decorative corners. Nail at maximum 8" (20.32 cm), including the centre hole.

  2. Fasteners and nailing: non-corrosive nails or screws with a 0.4" (1 cm) head and 0.150" (0.38 cm) shank, penetrating at least 1-1/4" (3.18 cm) into a solid surface. Nail the centre hole first, then the last hole at both ends and at least 4 more in the nailing channel: minimum 7 nails per full panel at maximum 16" (40.64 cm). Leave 1/16" (0.16 cm) under each head; the stoppers around the holes set this gap. If a cut piece has no centre hole, drill a 1/8" (0.32 cm) hole at the same height. On a furring wall, strips go at 8" (20.32 cm) o.c. with one behind every nail.

  3. Temperature adjustment: insert the panel into the starter strip, slide its left side over the previous panel and rotate it up. Above 68°F (20°C), slide to the stopper (check the reference line at the bottom right). Between 32°F and 68°F (0 to 20°C), align to the temperature line. Below 32°F (0°C), set the panel 1/16" (0.16 cm) right of that line. Never force a panel; polypropylene expands and contracts.

  4. Rows and edges: push each panel firmly upward so the hooks fully engage the row below. Vary the cut length of the first panel in every row so joints do not repeat, stair-step or line up. With decorative corners, cut the left side of the first panel straight and nail it 2-5/8" (6.67 cm) from the wall edge. With an outside corner or J-trim, leave 1/4" (0.64 cm) between the trim and the siding; required trim opening is 1" (2.54 cm).

  5. Decorative corners: install after two adjacent walls are complete, with rows at 2-5/8" (6.67 cm) from the corner and at equal height. First corner: slip the two external hooks under the starter strip (cut the internal hooks if they interfere), push up to fit and nail the top slots. Next corners: lock the internal hooks into the openings of the corner below, push up and nail. Last corner: cut the excess, make holes wider than the nail shank but smaller than the head, add a nailing strip behind and nail the folded top. Inside corners: inside corner post, two J-trims or two NovikTrim1; seal the inside corner first.

  6. Last row and masonry: on the last row, or anywhere you must nail outside the installation holes, knife a 1" (2.54 cm) slot in a concealed spot and shim as needed to keep the panel angle. Do not fasten accessories directly to the siding. Over masonry, stucco or CMU: weather-resistant barrier first, then vertical 1" x 3" (2.54 x 7.62 cm) furring strips, pressure treated for best performance, at 8" (20.32 cm) o.c., fastened at least 3/4" (1.91 cm) into the masonry. CCMC 13420-R requires installation over furring that leaves a continuous 19 mm air space outboard of the sheathing membrane.

  7. Care: do not paint (voids the warranty). Clean once a year or every other year with a garden hose; for stubborn dirt use a diluted mild laundry detergent (1/3 cup per 4 quarts of water) and a soft-bristle brush, rinsing under 100 psi. Clean bottom-up and rinse top-down. Never pressure wash (voids the warranty); avoid abrasive cleaners and strong solvents. Cut with a circular saw and finishing blade.

NovikShake RS8 RoughSawn 8 ft Shake: Frequently Asked Questions

Is NovikShake RS8 an 8 inch or an 8 foot shake?
8 feet. Novik names it the RoughSawn 8' Shake; each panel shows 95.3 in. long by 6.6 in. high once installed.
What is the difference between NovikShake RS8 and Northern Perfection?
RS8 has a coarse rough-sawn cedar face on a full 8 ft, single-course panel. Northern Perfection is an architecturally accurate 5 in. shake with a fine wood grain and saw-cut texture, on panels that show 42.6 in. x 15 in. and come in solid colours only.
How is RS8 different from the regular NovikShake RoughSawn panel?
Both have a rough-sawn cedar look, but NovikShake RS panels show 46 in. x 12.8 in. with about 48.8 sq. ft. per box, while RS8 panels run 95.3 in. long. RS8 is also the only one of the two offered in StainNatural colours.
What are NovikShake StainNatural colours?
Five stained finishes, Ebony, Oak, Sequoia, Teak and Walnut, that Novik describes as a deep, rich traditional stained cedar look. On Novik's NovikShake range they are listed only for RS8.
How much does a box of NovikShake RS8 cover?
About 96.4 sq. ft. from 22 panels. Decorative corners come 5 to a box and cover 5.68 linear ft. Request a quote with your wall and gable sizes and we will do the takeoff.
How do you install NovikShake RS8 in cold weather?
Set each panel by outdoor temperature: slide it to the stopper above 20°C (68°F), align it to the temperature line between 0 and 20°C, and place it 1/16 in. right of that line below 0°C (32°F).
Can NovikShake RS8 touch the roof?
Yes. Novik says NovikShake is impervious to moisture and can be in direct contact with the roofline. On the last row, cut 1 in. nailing slots where needed and shim to keep the panel angle right.
