Profile selection
is the most visible decision. Double-4 and double-5 clapboard profiles are the workhorse of Canadian residential construction - clean, traditional, and fast to install. Dutch lap adds a shadow line for more visual depth. Board and batten (typically 7/8" reveal) creates a strong vertical emphasis popular on farmhouse and modern farmhouse styles. Shake profiles mimic wood shingles for high-end curb appeal.
Panel thickness
directly affects durability, rigidity, and dent resistance. Panels run from 0.040" (builder grade) to 0.048"-0.050" (premium residential). Specify at least 0.044" for exposed or high-traffic elevations.
Insulated vs. standard
Insulated vinyl siding bonds a foam backing to the panel, adding roughly R-2.0 to R-3.5 of continuous insulation and substantially improving rigidity. Excellent choice for re-cladding projects where adding wall insulation is impractical. Adds 20-30% to material cost.
Colour durability
Premium lines use a co-extruded cap layer with UV inhibitors that resist fading for 20+ years. The cap layer is what carries the colour, and it is the difference between a wall that still matches its own trim in fifteen years and one that does not. Darker colours (navy, charcoal, deep red) require premium cap formulations - verify fade warranty before specifying dark colours.
Wind resistance rating

How long does vinyl siding last in Canada?
Quality vinyl siding lasts 30-40 years in Canadian climates. Mitten's lines carry a Limited Lifetime warranty, and Highland 42 is written as Lifetime Non-Prorated Transferable. Kaycan's Richmond and Verona pair a Limited Lifetime warranty with 25-year fade resistance. Can vinyl siding be installed in winter in Canada?
Vinyl contracts in the cold, and the manufacturers handle it by widening the gap rather than by stopping work: Kaycan instructs installers to increase the clearance at trims from 1/4" to 3/8" when installing below 4°C. Cold panel is also more brittle to cut, so let it warm before working it. If winter installation is unavoidable, store panels indoors before use and work in short runs to minimize breakage risk.
