Vinyl Siding

About Vinyl Siding
Vinyl siding remains Canada's most specified exterior cladding - and the reason is straightforward: no other material delivers comparable durability, colour depth, and low lifetime ownership cost at the price points that work for both new construction and re-cladding. Pro Materials supplies vinyl siding from Mitten and Kaycan, Canada's two most established manufacturers, giving contractors and builders access to over 100 profiles: double-4 and double-5 clapboard, dutch lap, board and batten, vertical panels, and shake and stone accent systems. Every product is manufactured to Canadian standards, independently tested for wind resistance, and backed by manufacturer warranties up to Limited Lifetime. Single-house sourcing or subdivision volume - we supply the quantity, colour depth, and accessories your job requires across Ontario and Western Canada.
Vinyl Siding Buying Guide
Key factors to evaluate when specifying vinyl siding for your project.
Choosing Vinyl Siding: Profile, Thickness, and Finish
Profile selection
is the most visible decision. Double-4 and double-5 clapboard profiles are the workhorse of Canadian residential construction - clean, traditional, and fast to install. Dutch lap adds a shadow line for more visual depth. Board and batten (typically 7/8" reveal) creates a strong vertical emphasis popular on farmhouse and modern farmhouse styles. Shake profiles mimic wood shingles for high-end curb appeal. Vertical panels work well on gables and accent zones.
Panel thickness
directly affects durability, rigidity, and dent resistance. Panels run from 0.040" (builder grade) to 0.048"–0.050" (premium residential) and thicker for premium lines. Specify at least 0.044" for exposed or high-traffic elevations.
Insulated vs. standard
Insulated vinyl siding bonds a foam backing to the panel, adding R-2 to R-3 of continuous insulation and substantially improving rigidity and dent resistance. Excellent choice for re-cladding projects where adding wall insulation is impractical. Adds 20–30% to material cost.
Colour durability
Premium lines use a co-extruded cap layer with UV inhibitors that resist fading for 20+ years. Budget lines fade noticeably within 10 years. Darker colours (navy, charcoal, deep red) require premium cap formulations - verify fade warranty before specifying dark colours.
Wind resistance rating
Canadian wind loads vary from 1.0 kPa in sheltered Ontario locations to 1.5+ kPa in coastal BC and exposed Prairie sites. Mitten's West Ridge and Sentry lines are rated for high wind loads - specify accordingly.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most popular vinyl siding profile in Canada?
Double-4 clapboard (4" exposure per panel row) has historically been the most common residential profile. Double-5 clapboard is gaining share because the wider panel installs faster and reads as more proportional on taller modern homes. Dutch lap remains popular on traditional and colonial styles.
How long does vinyl siding last in Canada?
Quality vinyl siding lasts 30–40 years in Canadian climates. Mitten's premium lines carry a Limited Lifetime warranty; Kaycan's mid-range products carry 25-year fade warranties. Proper installation - including expansion gaps at all fasteners and corner trim - is as important as panel quality for long-term performance.
Can vinyl siding be installed in winter in Canada?
Vinyl becomes brittle at temperatures below -10°C and should not be cut or nailed in those conditions without allowing it to warm up first. Most manufacturers recommend installation above -7°C. If winter installation is unavoidable, store panels indoors before use and work in short runs to minimize breakage risk.
Do you supply vinyl siding in custom colours?
We stock the full standard palettes from Mitten (up to 36 colours per line) and Kaycan. Custom colours beyond the standard palette require factory orders with lead time and minimum quantities. Contact us to discuss your colour requirements.
What is the difference between Mitten and Kaycan vinyl siding?
Both are excellent Canadian manufacturers with strong warranty programs. Mitten is known for high-impact formulations and a wide colour palette per line. Kaycan offers a broader product portfolio across price points and a particularly strong position in PVC trim and accessory matching. We can help you select the right line for your project's budget and performance requirements.
