A plain rectangular house has 4 outside corners. Starter strip runs along the base of every wall above. Outside corners run the height of your tallest wall. J-channel goes around each window you deducted, and across the head and both sides of each door. Results are in linear feet, because piece lengths differ by line.

How to Run an Estimate

Deduct openings
Add window and door counts. Use the custom field for oversized openings like garage doors or picture windows.
Set waste factor
10% for clean square walls, 15% if there are cuts around corners, 20% for gable ends or diagonal patterns.
Read your number
The results show net and gross area, the order in squares and cartons rounded up, and the trim runs in linear feet. Send the list straight to a quote request.

How do I calculate how much vinyl siding I need?
Measure the width and height of each wall in feet, multiply them, and add the walls together. Deduct about 12 sq ft per 3 x 4 ft window and 21 sq ft per 3 x 7 ft door. Add a waste factor of 10 to 20 percent. Then divide by the coverage per carton for your product and round up. Most vinyl cartons cover 100 or 200 sq ft. The calculator above does each step and shows the working.
Is a square of siding 100 sq ft?
Yes. A square is 100 square feet of wall, and Kaycan's estimating method divides the wall area by 100 to get the number of squares. Cartons are sized in squares. The standard Kaycan D4 and D5 cartons hold 200 sq ft, or two squares. Richmond, Montebello, Mitten West Ridge and Kaycan's vertical board and batten lines hold one. The calculator shows your order in squares as well as cartons.
What waste factor should I use for vinyl siding?
Kaycan's estimating method adds 10 percent for waste. Use 10 percent for clean rectangular walls and 15 percent for a moderate number of cuts around windows and corners. Use 20 percent for gable ends, diagonal runs or irregular walls. Running short mid-job costs more than a carton left over.
How many square feet does a carton of Kaycan or Mitten siding cover?
Standard D4 and D5 profiles (Hardwood Valley II, Timberlake, Verona) cover 200 sq ft per carton, and Prova and the Timberlake D4.5 and T3 cover 198. Richmond (D6), Mitten West Ridge (D8) and Montebello insulated siding cover 100 sq ft per carton. The calculator uses the manufacturer's rate for each product.
Do I need to deduct windows and doors from my siding calculation?
The calculator deducts 12 sq ft for each 3 x 4 ft window and 21 sq ft for each 3 x 7 ft door. Some contractors leave small windows in as a buffer for cuts and repairs. Kaycan's estimating method for Hardwood Valley II does not deduct openings at all. To leave them in, enter 0 windows and doors.
How does the calculator count starter strip, J-channel and corners?
In linear feet. Starter strip runs along the base of every wall you enter. Outside corners run the height of your tallest wall. J-channel goes around the windows and doors you deducted: 14 ft around each 3 x 4 window, and 17 ft across the head and both sides of each 3 x 7 door. Piece lengths differ by line, so we convert those figures to pieces for your chosen product on the quote.
Can the calculator handle soffit and skirting runs?
Yes. On the Soffit & Skirting tab, enter the overhang depth and the linear footage of each run separately. Panel soffit is counted in whole rows and whole panels, because a panel cannot be cut down its width to fill a shallow eave. A 10 or 15 percent waste allowance is then added.
