Fibre Cement Siding Buying Guide
Key factors to evaluate when specifying fibre cement siding for your project.
HZ5® and the CCMC listing
Every James Hardie siding line that ships to Ontario is its HZ5® formulation, engineered for freeze thaw. Hardie® Plank, Panel, Shingle and Artisan® are evaluated in CCMC Evaluation Report 12678-R. Hardie® Architectural Panel is not in that report, so confirm acceptance with your building department before you specify it. Allura is listed in CCMC 12987-R for use under the National Building Code of Canada.
ColorPlus® or primed
ColorPlus® Technology is James Hardie's baked-on factory finish. Plank, Panel (Smooth and Select Cedarmill®), Shingle and Trim Batten come in all 19 Statement Collection® colours; Hardie® Trim comes in 10 of them and Hardie® Soffit in 5. James Hardie's HS2401 warranty gives the siding a 30-year limited substrate warranty, and HS2403 gives the ColorPlus® finish a 15-year limited finish warranty. Primed product is painted on site, and it opens up sizes ColorPlus® does not cover: primed Plank adds the 9 1/4 in. and 12 in. widths, and primed Panel adds a 4x9 sheet. Our James Hardie page shows every colour by product, and our James Hardie colours guide shows which colours can run from wall to trim to soffit.
Picking the profile
- Hardie® Plank: 5/16 in. lap siding in 12 ft. lengths, Select Cedarmill®, Smooth and two Beaded faces, ColorPlus® widths from 5 1/4 to 8 1/4 in. - Hardie® Panel: 4 ft. wide vertical sheets in 8, 9 and 10 ft. lengths, which become board and batten with Hardie® Trim Batten over the joints. - Hardie® Shingle: 48 in. notched panels, Straight Edge at a 7 in. exposure or Staggered Edge at 6 in. - Hardie® Artisan®: 5/8 in. Lock Joint siding in Square Channel, Shiplap and V-Groove, with no starter strip or lap gauge, finished with Artisan® Trim. - Hardie® Architectural Panel: 4 ft. flat panels in Fine Sand or Sea Grass, set out with aluminum Architectural Trim reveals. - Allura: lap, vertical panel, soffit and shake, factory primed or Spectrum finished.
Fibre cement or something else?
Fibre cement is heavier and harder to cut than engineered wood siding or vinyl, and it carries a repaint cycle that vinyl does not. Our fiber cement vs vinyl comparison prices both over 30 years of ownership.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which James Hardie siding products can I get in Ontario?
The James Hardie dealer system lists five siding lines for Newmarket: Hardie® Plank lap siding, Hardie® Panel vertical siding, Hardie® Shingle straight and staggered edge panels, Hardie® Artisan® Lock Joint siding and Hardie® Architectural Panel. Plank, Panel and Shingle come in 19 ColorPlus® colours; Artisan® and Architectural Panel are primed for paint. Dream Collection® colours are available in the United States only.
Do the ColorPlus® colours cover James Hardie trim and soffit too?
Partly. Hardie® Trim Batten boards come in all 19 Statement Collection® colours, the same palette as Plank, Panel and Shingle. Hardie® Trim boards come in 10: Arctic White, Cobble Stone, Monterey Taupe, Timber Bark, Rich Espresso, Pearl Gray, Evening Blue, Aged Pewter, Iron Gray and Midnight Black. Hardie® Soffit comes in 5: Arctic White, Cobble Stone, Timber Bark, Iron Gray and Midnight Black. Everything is also available primed for paint.
Is fibre cement siding noncombustible?
James Hardie's Hardie® Plank, Panel and Shingle are noncombustible under CAN/ULC-S114 and have a Flame Spread Rating of 0 under CAN/ULC-S102. That fire performance is the main reason fibre cement gets specified over vinyl or engineered wood, along with its resistance to rot and insects. Check each product page for its own listing, because the CCMC report and test results differ by product line.
Is Allura fibre cement approved in Canada?
Yes. Allura fibre cement is listed in CCMC Evaluation Report 12987-R for use under the National Building Code of Canada, and its siding carries a 30-year transferable limited warranty with a 15-year warranty on the Spectrum factory finish. It comes factory primed or Spectrum finished in 25 colours, in lap siding, vertical panel, soffit and shake profiles.
How does fiber cement siding compare to vinyl siding for cost?
Fibre cement runs about 12 to 18 CAD per square foot installed in Ontario against 6 to 9 for standard vinyl, so on a full re-clad it lands close to double. The heavier panel and the blade wear are most of the labour difference, and our fiber cement vs vinyl comparison prices both over 30 years of ownership. However, it has superior fire resistance and is often specified in subdivisions with architectural controls that restrict vinyl. For high-end residential and commercial projects where premium finish matters, the cost premium is often justified.
