Never face-nail siding — always fasten through the nailing hem only
Leave 1/32" clearance between fastener head and nailing hem (panels must move freely)
Leave 1/4" expansion gap at all openings, corners, and trim junctions
Do not caulk between panels or between siding and trim — panels must expand and contract freely
Overlap panel end joints by at least 1"
Stagger end joints by a minimum of 3 courses between adjacent vertical seams
Check horizontal alignment every 5–6 courses with a level or chalk line
Install starter strip first — this sets the angle and alignment for all subsequent courses
Apply undersill trim under all windows; use snap-lock punch on cut panel edges for secure fit
Apply window drip cap above all windows and doors before installing siding over them
Do not install over foil-backed foam insulation — voids warranty (foil traps heat)
Check all local building codes and fire regulations before installation
If removing old siding, check for asbestos before disturbing — follow local abatement regulations
General Tools
Specialty Tools
| Accessory | Purpose | Where to use |
|---|---|---|
| Starter Strip / Starter Base | First course anchor — sets the angle for the entire installation | Bottom of wall, level, 1" above finished grade or above foundation |
| 5/8" J-Trim (VJB58)5/8" deep channel, 3/4" face — standard for most openings | Frames doors, windows, and other wall penetrations | Around door and window openings; sides and top |
| Undersill Trim (VTUTB) | Secures the cut top panel under a window or at top of wall | Directly below window sill; use snap-lock punch on panel edge for lock-in |
| Window Drip Cap | Diverts water away from window head before siding is applied | Above all windows and doors, installed before the overlapping siding course |
| 1/2" Inside Corner Post (VCBINP)3/8" face, two 5/8" wide channels | Finished inside corners where two walls meet at an interior angle | Plumb at inside corners; siding slides into 5/8"-wide channels |
| 3" Outside Corner Post (VCNN3) | Finished outside corners where two walls meet at an exterior angle | Plumb at outside corners; siding slides into two 3/4"-wide channels |
Formula
Siding required (sq.ft.) = [Total wall area + Triangular gable area − Door/window deductions] + 10% waste
1 square = 100 sq.ft. (standard industry unit for siding)
Measure total length of all walls and multiply by wall height to get gross wall area
Measure any triangular gable ends: (base × height) ÷ 2 per gable
Add Step 1 + Step 2 for total gross area
Measure each door opening (typical: 3' × 6'8") and multiply count by area
Measure each window opening and multiply count by area
Add all door and window deductions
Subtract deductions from gross area to get net siding area
Add 10% for waste, cuts, and future repairs
Divide by coverage per box (200 sq.ft.) to determine number of boxes required
Colour goes all the way through the panel — scratches or cut edges are not visible from normal viewing distance
