Manufactured by Imperial Kool-Ray Inc. in New Brunswick, these powder-coated aluminum columns install as true load-bearing supports or slip over existing columns for a clean decorative upgrade — and they'll never need painting, sanding, or replacement due to rot or rust. About Imperial Aluminum Columns

Imperial Aluminum Columns from Mitten are the easy-to-assemble, maintenance-free column solution for Canadian porches, decks, and entranceways. Manufactured by Imperial Kool-Ray Inc. in Richibucto, New Brunswick, these powder-coated aluminum columns can be used as genuine load-bearing supports or as decorative wraps to refresh an existing column — with no painting, no rusting, and no rot ever. Two profiles are available: the Plain column with a clean, smooth surface suited to Cape Cod and modern architecture, and the Recessed column with deep geometric panel lines that add architectural character to craftsman, federal, and shaker-style homes. Both profiles are available in a 7¼" square cross-section in four heights — 96", 108", 120", and 144" — that cover the full range of standard residential porch heights. Matching aluminum top and base assemblies are available for each profile (sold separately by the pair). Columns assemble in four pieces, male-to-female, with an included L-bracket system for secure floor and soffit attachment. Laying plates accommodate wood-surface load-bearing installations on sloped patio decks, and plastic gasket separators protect against galvanic contact with concrete or ACQ pressure-treated wood. Available in White and Black powder coat; other colours available — contact us for details. Installation Guide

UNPACKING — Unwrap the box and use the carton as a cushion to avoid any damages to the column during the assembling.
MEASURING & CUTTING — For standard installation, measure the required height and cut the pieces before fitting them together, male to female.
DRILLING CAP HOLES — Drill two holes 3/16" (5 mm) on the upper rim of the cap, facing the flat surface of the column.
ASSEMBLY — Place the cap and base at each end of the column and retain with tape about 18" away from the end, in order to give room to install the hardware.
RAISING & LEVELLING — Raise the structure 1/4" (6 mm) for easier installation. Place the column to level and lower the structure onto the column. Screw the "L" bracket to the floor using #8 – 1" (25.4 mm) screws, and to the column using Visteck #8 – 3/4" (19 mm) screws. ATTENTION: Avoid screwing the "L" bracket at the column joint.
SECURING THE CAP — Raise the cap to sit flush to the soffit and fix with 2 Visteck #8 – 3/4" (19 mm) screws.
ROUND COLUMNS — ATTENTION: If a contrary pressure is applied at each end of the column when assembling a round column, it could end up twisted. Twist it backwards to get it straight, using the base and cap at each end, taking care not to scratch the apparent parts.
WRAPPING AN EXISTING COLUMN — IMPORTANT: The base and cap must be ordered in two pieces from the factory before starting a wrap installation. Measure the required height and cut the column 1/4" shorter for easier installation. Wrap the sections around the existing column, male to female. Install the cap and base with #8 – 3/4" (19 mm) screws.
LAYING PLATE INSTALLATION — This laying plate is designed for load-bearing column installations and is specially made to level the column. Drill a hole with a 5/64" (2 mm) bit through the column and the small pegs at the same time. Secure with self-tapping 3/4" (19 mm) screws. Install with the arrow pointing toward the front of the patio or balcony; reverse the direction (arrow toward wall) when installed on top of the column. Use shims to compensate for any slope.
RAILING ADAPTERS — Railing and column adapters are available for mounting a railing to a round column. Contact Mitten or Imperial Kool-Ray for details: 1-800-561-3100.
HARDWARE SUMMARY — Visteck #8 – 3/4" (19 mm) self-tapping screws: column-to-L-bracket and cap fastening. #8 – 1" (25.4 mm) screws: L bracket to floor. Laying plate: #8 – 1" (25 mm) stainless screws at each corner; 5/64" (2 mm) drill bit for peg holes.
MAINTENANCE — Imperial aluminum columns have a powder-coat paint finish and are designed to be maintenance free. For routine cleaning, use a mild soap-and-water solution with a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish.
