Yes. CertainTeed allows spanned soffit and porch ceiling use, with a maximum span of 24 in. for sheets of 1 in. nominal (3/4 in. actual), against 16 in. for beadboard panels. The space above must be properly ventilated.

How do you fasten a 4x8 PVC sheet?

Fasten 16 in. on centre horizontally, 6 in. on centre vertically and 4 in. around the perimeter, using stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners that reach 1-1/2 in. into framing. The manual calls for 6D (2 in.) finish nails on 3/8 and 1/2 in. sheets and 8D (2-1/2 in.) on 5/8 in. to 1 in.

About Restoration Millwork® PVC Sheets

Restoration Millwork PVC Sheets are plain flat panels for the parts of a trim package that boards and beadboard do not cover: soffits, pop-out bay windows, dormer faces, raised panels and custom shapes. You buy a full 4 ft. wide sheet and cut it to the opening, so the piece can be whatever size the detail calls for.

There are nine sizes across the PVC sheet 4x8, 4x10 and 4x12 formats. The smooth sheet is smooth on both faces and fully reversible, in 1/2 in. (4x10 or 4x12), 5/8 in. and 3/4 in. (4x12), and 4/4 (4x8 or 4x12). The wood grain sheet has a TrueTexture grain molded from real boards on one face and smooth on the back, in 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 in., all 4x8. Factory edges are heat sealed so dirt does not collect, and a removable film protects the face until the job is done.

CertainTeed's installation manual fastens sheets 16 in. on centre horizontally, 6 in. on centre vertically and 4 in. around the perimeter, with at least 1-1/2 in. of penetration into framing. In a soffit or porch ceiling, a sheet of 1 in. nominal (3/4 in. actual) can span up to 24 in. Cut with a carbide woodworking blade of 32 teeth or more, glue scarf and mitre joints with a cellular PVC adhesive, and allow 1/4 in. per 18 ft. for movement. Sheets are non-structural and must not be used as siding.

The sheet ships natural white and does not need paint. To colour-match, scuff sand it and use 100% acrylic latex with an LRV of 55 or higher; darker colours need Sherwin-Williams VinylSafe. It carries a Class A flame spread rating and meets ICC and CCMC requirements. Send us your take-off and we will quote sizes and fasteners.

Installation Guide

Use a cellular PVC adhesive on all mitre and scarf joints to control expansion and contraction
Recommended adhesives: Extreme PVC Trim Welder® or Partite® Adhesive
Cut with a carbide-tipped blade designed for wood, 32 teeth or more; do not use fine-tooth metal-cutting or plywood blades, which cause heat buildup
Support the sheet across its full length when cutting
