James Hardie Colours in Canada: How Far Up the Wall Each One Goes
Key points
- All 19 Statement Collection colours come on Hardie Plank, Panel, Shingle and Trim Batten; Hardie Trim carries 10 of them and Hardie Soffit 5
- Five colours run from wall to trim to soffit in ColorPlus: Arctic White, Cobble Stone, Timber Bark, Iron Gray and Midnight Black
- The ColorPlus finish warranty covers peeling, cracking and chipping for 15 years; from year 2 the payment is reduced by 6.67% until nothing applies after year 15

James Hardie named Mountain Sage its first ever Colour of the Year, for 2024. Order it from a dealer in Newmarket and you get Mountain Sage siding and Mountain Sage battens, but no Mountain Sage trim and no Mountain Sage soffit, because James Hardie colours do not reach every part of the house. That surprise usually arrives at the quote, after the homeowner has already chosen. This guide moves it to the start.
Watch: the 19 colours climbing from wall to trim to soffit, the colour map, the three Colours of the Year, the finish warranty and the touch-up rules. We sort the palette the way a wall is built: from the siding up to the trim and the soffit, then by light against dark and warm against cool. Every colour list comes from James Hardie's dealer system for Newmarket, and every warranty term comes from James Hardie's own documents. If you are still deciding between materials, our fibre cement against vinyl siding comparison covers cost and upkeep first.
How Many James Hardie Colours Are Available in Canada?
Through dealers in Newmarket and the GTA, James Hardie's factory ColorPlus finish comes in 19 colours, the Statement Collection, and all 19 come on Hardie Plank, Hardie Panel, Hardie Shingle and Hardie Trim Batten boards. Hardie Trim carries 10 of them and Hardie Soffit carries 5, so only five colours can run from the wall to the eave in one factory finish.
Here are the 19, in the order of the colour map further down, lightest first: Arctic White, Navajo Beige, Cobble Stone, Light Mist, Pearl Gray, Monterey Taupe, Khaki Brown, Gray Slate, Boothbay Blue, Aged Pewter, Timber Bark, Mountain Sage, Night Gray, Evening Blue, Rich Espresso, Iron Gray, Countrylane Red, Deep Ocean and Midnight Black.
James Hardie says the Statement Collection contains "up to 19" colours, and its ColorPlus design guide prints "Scan for regional offering" beside the palette. That line matters, because the same guide pictures Hardie Trim in Mountain Sage, which is not on the trim list for Newmarket. The answer for any one house depends on the postal code and on the product, and this is what it comes to here:
| Part of the house | Hardie products | ColorPlus colours, Newmarket and the GTA |
|---|---|---|
| Wall | Hardie Plank, Hardie Panel (Smooth and Select Cedarmill), Hardie Shingle | All 19 |
| Battens | Hardie Trim Batten boards | All 19 |
| Trim, fascia and corners | Hardie Trim boards | 10: Arctic White, Cobble Stone, Monterey Taupe, Timber Bark, Rich Espresso, Pearl Gray, Evening Blue, Aged Pewter, Iron Gray, Midnight Black |
| Soffit | Hardie Soffit panels | 5: Arctic White, Cobble Stone, Timber Bark, Iron Gray, Midnight Black |
| Primed only, painted on site | Hardie Artisan and Artisan Trim, Hardie Architectural Panel, Hardie Panel in Stucco and Sierra 8, the Beaded Plank textures, Plank in 9 1/4 and 12 inch widths | None |
A few sizes sit outside that table too. ColorPlus Plank runs from 5 1/4 to 8 1/4 inch widths, and the wider boards come primed. Hardie Panel's 4x9 sheet, the 4x8 foot Hardie Soffit sheet and the 5/4 by 4 1/2 inch Roughsawn trim board come primed only. These lists are James Hardie's for Newmarket; Toronto returns the same, while parts of Eastern Ontario get fewer Roughsawn trim colours. And the Dream Collection, the larger made-to-order range that American homeowners see online, is not an option here: James Hardie's Dream Collection page says its colours "are available in the United States only".
The Four Hardie Lines That Carry All 19 Colours
Which James Hardie Colours Match on Trim and Soffit?
Five James Hardie colours match all the way up: Arctic White, Cobble Stone, Timber Bark, Iron Gray and Midnight Black come in ColorPlus on the siding, the trim and the soffit. Five more match on trim only. The other nine are wall colours, which means a contrasting trim or primed trim painted on site.
Try it on the drawing below. Every wall colour is open, but the trim and soffit rows only offer what James Hardie supplies for those parts in Newmarket and the GTA, so any combination you can build here is one you can order.
- Wall: Mountain Sage
- Trim: Arctic White
- Soffit: Arctic White
The palette splits into three groups:
- Wall, trim and soffit (5): Arctic White, Cobble Stone, Timber Bark, Iron Gray, Midnight Black. Every soffit colour is also a trim colour, so these five can be done as one colour from foundation to roofline.
- Wall and trim (5): Monterey Taupe, Rich Espresso, Pearl Gray, Evening Blue, Aged Pewter. The trim can match, and the soffit takes one of the five above.
- Wall only (9): Navajo Beige, Khaki Brown, Mountain Sage, Light Mist, Gray Slate, Boothbay Blue, Deep Ocean, Night Gray, Countrylane Red. These need a trim decision before the order goes in.
A wall-only colour is not a dead end. James Hardie's design guide shows Deep Ocean and Night Gray Plank under Arctic White trim, Light Mist Shingle and Plank under Arctic White trim, and a Mountain Sage house with Midnight Black trim, all of them pairings you can build from the Newmarket lists. Every Hardie Trim size is also sold primed, so a crew can paint primed trim to match a Mountain Sage wall on site. That paint is the painter's finish, though, not ColorPlus, and the 15 year ColorPlus warranty stays with the factory-finished boards.
Picture a homeowner in Newmarket who has chosen Navajo Beige for a 1990s two-storey. The two lightest trim colours on the list, Arctic White and Cobble Stone, sit either side of it in lightness, so the choice is between a crisp white frame and a soft, near-tonal one. Both are on the order form; a Navajo Beige trim is not.
Light or Dark, Warm or Cool: Reading the Palette
Nine of the 19 James Hardie colours sit in the darker half of the lightness scale, only four sit above 75 on it, and every colour except Countrylane Red is muted. Plotting the palette by lightness and by warmth shows which colours are near twins and which ones will contrast with your brick.
A swatch card gives you the colours in the manufacturer's order. The map below puts them where James Hardie's RGB values place them: up the page for lightness, left for blue-grey and right for beige, brown and red. We calculated every position from James Hardie's RGB values, nothing was placed by eye.
| Colour | Published RGB | Lightness (L*) | Blue to yellow (b*) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arctic White | #E0E0D8 | 89.0 | 3.9 |
| Navajo Beige | #D5C9B2 | 81.4 | 13.0 |
| Cobble Stone | #C6BEB0 | 77.3 | 8.1 |
| Light Mist | #B6BAB5 | 75.1 | 2.0 |
| Pearl Gray | #B2AEA9 | 71.3 | 3.1 |
| Monterey Taupe | #A19A8B | 63.8 | 8.8 |
| Khaki Brown | #A28F7D | 60.6 | 12.2 |
| Gray Slate | #898A87 | 57.3 | 1.5 |
| Boothbay Blue | #778184 | 53.3 | -2.9 |
| Aged Pewter | #7D7974 | 51.0 | 3.3 |
| Timber Bark | #7B7064 | 47.9 | 8.2 |
| Mountain Sage | #706F5E | 46.5 | 9.6 |
| Night Gray | #6A6D6F | 45.8 | -1.5 |
| Evening Blue | #5F696D | 43.7 | -3.5 |
| Rich Espresso | #5F5A55 | 38.6 | 3.6 |
| Iron Gray | #575B59 | 38.3 | 0.6 |
| Countrylane Red | #714D47 | 36.5 | 9.7 |
| Deep Ocean | #49545C | 35.1 | -6.1 |
| Midnight Black | #3D3E3E | 26.1 | -0.2 |
Four things stand out once the colours are placed:
- Iron Gray and Rich Espresso are the same depth. They sit at 38.3 and 38.6 on the lightness scale. Iron Gray sits close to neutral; Rich Espresso leans warm. Choosing between them is a choice of temperature, not of darkness.
- Only four colours lean clearly cool. Deep Ocean, Evening Blue, Boothbay Blue and Night Gray lean blue. Midnight Black sits right on the neutral line.
- Countrylane Red is the boldest colour in the range by a margin. Its chroma, a measure of how strong a colour is, comes out at 17.3; the next strongest, Navajo Beige and Khaki Brown, are about 13.
- Arctic White is an off-white. James Hardie gives it as RGB 224, 224, 216, and the slightly lower blue value gives it a faint yellow cast against a bright white window frame.
This is where the fixed parts of the house come in. James Hardie's design guide tells homeowners to pick colours that "complement elements of your home that you cannot or do not want to change, such as your roof, garage doors and any brick or stone accents". Red-brown brick sits on the warm side. Say a contractor is re-siding the upper storey of a 1970s brick side-split in Aurora: Timber Bark or Khaki Brown on the warm side will read as part of the brick's family, while Evening Blue or Night Gray on the cool side will set the siding apart from it. Neither is wrong; the map tells you which one you are choosing.
Lightness also decides how much trim shows. Arctic White trim on an Iron Gray wall is a gap of about 51 points on that scale, while Cobble Stone trim on a Pearl Gray wall is about 6. James Hardie's guide describes both moves: light trim "will draw attention to the trim", and body and trim colours "only subtly different" create a soft contrast that "makes your home appear larger".
Iron Gray and the Other Colours of the Year: How Far Each One Goes
Iron Gray is James Hardie's Colour of the Year for 2026, and in Newmarket and the GTA it is one of the five colours that come in ColorPlus on siding, trim and soffit. The two before it reach less far: Evening Blue, the 2025 colour, stops at the trim, and Mountain Sage, the 2024 colour, at the wall.
James Hardie announced Iron Gray on November 10, 2025, and its press release describes two ways to use it: with "crisp accents such as Hardie Trim in Arctic White", or as "a powerful, monochromatic statement when paired with matching Iron Gray trim". Both of those can be ordered in Newmarket and the GTA. The three Colours of the Year so far, against the Newmarket lists:
| Year | Colour of the Year | Wall and battens | Trim | Soffit | Lightness (0 to 100) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Iron Gray | Yes | Yes | Yes | 38.3 |
| 2025 | Evening Blue | Yes | Yes | No | 43.7 |
| 2024 | Mountain Sage | Yes | No | No | 46.5 |
A dark body with light trim, the contrast James Hardie's 2026 release suggests for Iron Gray. Arctic White soffit is on the list too.
Arctic White is the other colour people search for by name, and for good reason. It is the lightest of the 19, it is on all three parts, and James Hardie's design guide shows it as the trim on Night Gray, Deep Ocean and Evening Blue walls. A builder in King Township finishing a modern farmhouse could run Arctic White Panel with Arctic White battens, trim and soffit as a single colour, or flip it to Midnight Black trim, a pairing the design guide also shows.
What Does the ColorPlus Finish Warranty Cover?
James Hardie's ColorPlus warranty, document HS2403, covers the factory finish against peeling, cracking and chipping for 15 years from purchase, in Canada outside the three territories. James Hardie chooses whether to refund, replace or, in year one only, reimburse paint and labour; from year 2 the payment is reduced by 6.67% until nothing applies. Fading from normal weathering is excluded.
The ColorPlus finish has its own warranty, separate from the 30 year substrate warranty on the board itself. These are the terms in the ColorPlus finish warranty, effective February 2024:
| Term | What HS2403 says |
|---|---|
| Where | The U.S. (except Alaska), Puerto Rico, and Canada (except Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut) |
| How long | 15 years from the date of purchase |
| What it covers | The finish will not peel, crack or chip |
| Remedy | James Hardie's choice: refund, replace the defective portion, or, during the first year, reimburse reasonable fees for paint and labour to repair the finish, up to $2.15 per square foot (the document does not name a currency) |
| Years 2 to 15 | "The warranty payment shall be reduced by 6.67% such that after the 15th year no warranty shall be applicable" |
| Colour change | Fading and chalking from normal weathering are not covered; excess colour change, more than 4 delta E units within the first 3 years, is |
| Who | The first retail buyer, the first owner of the building, and the first person it transfers to |
Delta E is the standard measure of how far apart two colours are. For a sense of scale, Light Mist and Pearl Gray come out about 5 apart on the CIELAB values behind our colour map, and you can see the difference between them on a screen. Read the fading exclusion as written, because some of James Hardie's marketing pages describe the warranty as covering fading. The document is the one that pays.
Cut Edges, Nail Heads and Touch-Up in Cold Weather
ColorPlus arrives finished, so anything that damages it on site is repaired with James Hardie's own ColorPlus touch-up kit, matched to one colour. Each kit holds a pint of paint, a nail concealer and an edge sealer, and James Hardie estimates one kit covers about 4,000 square feet of siding or 1,600 square feet of trim. A house with siding in one colour and trim in another needs at least two.
James Hardie's Canadian instructions set the rules, and late-season jobs in Ontario run into them:
-
Touch up only what is smaller than a dime. Nail heads, nicks and scrapes get touch-up; a larger damaged area means replacing the piece.
-
Keep it above 4°C. The kit must not freeze, and it goes on only when the air and the siding are above 4°C (40°F). A crew in Barrie in November should store kits somewhere heated overnight.
-
No caulk as touch-up. Caulk, including colour-matched caulk, and patching compound are not approved for ColorPlus, and nail heads are never caulked.
-
Seal the cuts. Every non-factory cut edge gets the edge sealer, unless it ends in trim and is caulked.
-
Use James Hardie's kit, not shop paint. Problems caused by third-party touch-up paint are not covered by the ColorPlus finish warranty.
One gap to know about: James Hardie's dealer system lists touch-up kits for 18 of the 19 colours, and Midnight Black is not among them. On a Midnight Black job we confirm the kit with James Hardie when the order goes in.
How to Choose a James Hardie Colour, in the Order That Avoids Surprises
Choosing in the wrong order is how a wall colour ends up without matching trim. This is the order we suggest:
-
Choose the product line first. The colour list depends on the product. Hardie Artisan and Artisan Trim, Hardie Architectural Panel, Hardie Panel in Stucco and Sierra 8, the Beaded Plank textures and the 9 1/4 and 12 inch Plank widths come primed only, so pick the line, texture and width before the colour.
-
Check the trim list before you fall for a wall colour. Hardie Trim comes in 10 ColorPlus colours. If the wall colour is not one of them, decide now between a contrasting trim colour from the 10 and primed trim painted on site.
-
Decide what the soffit does. Hardie Soffit comes in 5 ColorPlus colours: Arctic White, Cobble Stone, Timber Bark, Iron Gray and Midnight Black. Match it to the trim, to the wall where that colour exists, or treat it as its own colour.
-
Look at real samples outside, at more than one time of day. James Hardie's design guide says colours change with the angle of the sun and the amount of sunlight, so view samples in natural light at several times of day and under different cloud cover, against the roof, brick or stone that is staying.
-
Put every colour name and touch-up kit on the quote. List the colour, texture and width for every part, and one ColorPlus touch-up kit per colour. James Hardie estimates one kit covers about 4,000 square feet of siding or 1,600 square feet of trim.
A screen is the weakest place to judge any of this. James Hardie's own Statement Collection page warns that "screen displays can vary", and its samples come in the Select Cedarmill texture only, so a Smooth wall will read a little differently from the sample in raking light. The vinyl siding colours guide makes the same point for vinyl, and its roof pairing advice applies to fibre cement as well.
If the wall is going vertical, our board and batten siding guide covers how Hardie Panel and the 2 1/2 inch battens go together, and since the battens come in all 19 colours they can match the panel or contrast with it. For the cost side of a fibre cement job, the Ontario siding cost guide puts it next to vinyl, steel and engineered wood per square foot.
