Hardie® Panel Vertical Siding is James Hardie's 4 ft. wide, 5/16 in. fibre cement panel, in 8, 9 and 10 ft. lengths, and the base for Hardie board and batten. Smooth and Select Cedarmill® come in all 19 ColorPlus® Statement Collection® colours in 4x8 and 4x10; Stucco and Sierra 8 are primed. Listed in CCMC Evaluation Report 12678-R, which requires a drained and vented air space of at least 10 mm behind the panel in all areas.
Hardie Panel is the flat sheet of the range: fibre cement, 5/16 inch thick and four feet wide, in 8, 9 and 10 foot lengths. It covers a wall fast and it is the base of almost every Hardie board and batten you see, because the moment Hardie Trim Batten goes over the seams, a plain vertical panel becomes the modern farmhouse wall. There are four faces. Smooth is flat and paint-like. Select Cedarmill is embossed with a vertical cedar grain. Stucco has the trowelled look of stucco without a stucco crack in it. Sierra 8 has vertical grooves cut into the face, which is why the instructions suggest doubling the stud at panel joints so the nails do not land in a groove.
Smooth and Select Cedarmill are the two you can buy prefinished, in all 19 Statement Collection colours with the ColorPlus finish baked on at the plant, in 4x8 and 4x10. Every texture also comes primed, including a 4x9 that the ColorPlus line does not offer. The installation detail that matters most is behind the panel, not on it. HardiePanel HZ5 is listed in CCMC Evaluation Report 12678-R, and the report requires it to be installed in all areas over wood strapping that creates a drained and vented air space at least 10 mm deep, with vertical joints landing on studs. The single family instructions from James Hardie only recommend a rainscreen, so if you are pricing a job, price the strapping.
