About James Hardie
James Hardie is the fibre cement everyone means when they say Hardie board, and James Hardie describes itself as the number one brand of siding in North America. Pro Materials is an authorized James Hardie dealer and distributor, supplying the full range that ships to Ontario from our Newmarket warehouse to contractors, builders and renovators across York Region, Simcoe County and the GTA: Hardie Plank, Hardie Panel, Hardie Shingle, Hardie Artisan, Hardie Architectural Panel, the trim and batten boards, Hardie Soffit and Hardie Backer. Everything on the siding side is HZ5, the formulation James Hardie engineers for freeze thaw, and every line is quoted with your order.
What Hardie board actually is
Fibre cement, which is a genuinely different material from the vinyl and engineered wood on the rest of this site rather than a premium version of them. The board is Portland cement, sand and cellulose fibre, cured into a solid plank or panel, and James Hardie's warranty states that it will not crack, split, edge check or warp from water, heat and freezing temperatures when tested to ASTM C1185, that termites and wood-boring insects will not damage it, and that it resists woodpeckers. James Hardie has been in fibre cement since 1903, when the founder began importing French fibro cement into Australia, and pioneered asbestos-free fibre cement, reinforced with cellulose fibre, in the mid 1980s. As of March 2024, James Hardie reported 11 manufacturing facilities in the United States sourcing 81 percent of their raw materials locally, and more than seven times the North American fibre cement capacity of its nearest competitor.
Why HZ5 is the only version that belongs on an Ontario wall
James Hardie does not sell one board everywhere. The Hardie Zone system splits the continent in two: HZ10 for hot, humid, high UV climates, and HZ5 for climates with seasonal temperature swings, freezing temperatures, snow and ice, which takes in the northern United States and Canada. HZ5 lap siding is also physically a different profile from its southern equivalent: a sloped top that drains to the outer face of the lap, and a bullnose drip edge at the bottom that throws water clear instead of letting it wick back under. One exception worth catching at order time is that the 12 inch plank does not carry that drip edge.

More about James Hardie
The range, and what each one is for
Hardie Plank is the lap siding and the volume seller, 5/16 inch thick in 12 foot lengths, in Select Cedarmill, Smooth and two primed Beaded textures, with exposures from 4 to 10 3/4 inches. Hardie Panel is the 4 foot wide vertical sheet in 8 and 10 foot lengths, plus 9 foot primed, in Smooth, Select Cedarmill, Stucco and Sierra 8, and it becomes board and batten the moment Hardie Trim Batten goes over the seams. Hardie Shingle is the cedar look, 48 inch notched panels a quarter inch thick, as a staggered edge at a 6 inch exposure or a straight edge at 7 inches. Hardie Artisan is 5/8 inch Lock Joint siding in Square Channel, Shiplap and V-Groove, primed, finished with 1 1/2 inch Artisan Trim. Hardie Trim handles corners, friezes and window surrounds, 4/4 at three quarters of an inch and 5/4 at a full inch, in widths to 11 1/4 inches. Hardie Soffit closes the eave vented or non vented in 12, 16 and 24 inch widths, with a 4 by 8 foot non vented primed sheet as well. Hardie Architectural Panel and its aluminum Architectural Trim make the flat panel and reveal facade, and Hardie Backer 500 is the cement board behind tile indoors.
The colour conversation, including the part that catches people out
ColorPlus Technology is baked onto the board in the plant rather than sprayed on site, so a ColorPlus wall needs no field painting and the finish carries a warranty of its own. The Statement Collection runs to 19 colours, and through us the full 19 are offered on Hardie Plank, Hardie Panel, Hardie Shingle and the Trim Batten boards. The trim carries ten of them and the soffit five, so the table above is the one to check before you pick a wall colour and expect trim to match. Our James Hardie colours guide lets you build a wall, trim and soffit from the colours actually made for each part. Artisan, Architectural Panel and the Beaded Plank textures are primed only. The Dream Collection, with its roughly 700 made to order finishes, is available in the United States only, which is reliably the thing a homeowner has already fallen in love with before anyone checks. Iron Gray is the 2026 Colour of the Year, and Evening Blue held it in 2025.
What the building department will ask you for
Hardie siding is evaluated in Canada under CCMC Evaluation Report 12678-R, held by James Hardie Building Products, Inc., first issued in 1995 and last modified on 21 October 2025. It covers HardiePlank HZ5 Lap Siding, HardiePanel HZ5 Vertical Siding, HardieShingle HZ5 notched panels and individual shingle, and both Artisan profiles, and the current edition is assessed against the National Building Code 2015 and 2020 (earlier editions cited Ontario Ruling 95-17-36). Its opinion covers the uncoated boards. It does not cover the trim, soffit, Architectural Panel or Architectural Trim. Read its conditions: Hardie Panel and Artisan Lock Joint must go over a drained and vented air space at least 10 mm deep, and Plank and Shingle need one in the high moisture areas set out in Sentence 9.27.2.2.(5). On fire, quote the Canadian tests rather than the American ones: under CAN/ULC-S114 the siding is noncombustible, and James Hardie's instructions give a Flame Spread Rating of 0 under CAN/ULC-S102. Hardie Backer has its own report, CCMC 14091-R, as interior tile backing.
Read the warranty as two documents, not one
James Hardie's 30 year limited warranty, HS2401 of February 2024, covers the siding, trim, soffit, Artisan and Architectural Panels installed in Canada, the territories aside. At James Hardie's discretion it refunds, replaces, or reimburses up to twice the original retail cost of a defective portion in any of the 30 years, which is why James Hardie markets it as non prorated; it does not pay labour, and it passes to one subsequent owner. The ColorPlus finish is a separate instrument, a 15 year limited warranty that reduces by 6.67 percent a year after the first. Treating the two as a single 30 year promise is the mistake, and it is much better corrected before the quote is signed than after a fade claim is refused.
James Hardie: Frequently Asked Questions
- Where can you buy James Hardie siding in Ontario?
- Pro Materials is an authorized James Hardie dealer and distributor, supplying the range from our Newmarket warehouse, Unit 5, 1235 Journey's End Circle, with the counter open Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. We serve contractors, builders and renovators across York Region, Simcoe County and the GTA, and delivery is quoted with your order. Call the counter or request a quote so we can confirm the exact profile, texture and colour before you commit a job to it.
- What is Hardie board?
- Hardie board is the name the trade uses for James Hardie fibre cement siding. The board is Portland cement, sand and cellulose fibre cured into a solid plank or panel, so it behaves like a cement product rather than a plastic or a wood one. Under CAN/ULC-S114 the siding is noncombustible, and James Hardie's Canadian instructions give a Flame Spread Rating of 0 under CAN/ULC-S102. Every James Hardie siding, trim and soffit product that ships to Ontario is the HZ5 formulation, engineered for wet and freezing conditions rather than heat and humidity.
- Which James Hardie products are available in Ontario?
- James Hardie's dealer system lists twelve products for Newmarket: Hardie Plank, Hardie Panel, Hardie Shingle, Hardie Artisan, Hardie Architectural Panel, Hardie Trim boards, Hardie Trim Batten boards, Hardie Artisan Trim, Hardie Architectural Trim, Hardie Soffit, Hardie Backer 500 and the ColorPlus touch-up kit. Not available here: the Dream Collection colours, Artisan Lap, individual shingles, Hardie Intuitive Panel, Hardie Weather Barrier, Hardie HydroDefense backer and the 1/4 in. backer board.
- How many James Hardie colours are there?
- The Statement Collection, the ColorPlus Technology palette, runs to 19 colours: Arctic White, Cobble Stone, Navajo Beige, Khaki Brown, Monterey Taupe, Timber Bark, Rich Espresso, Mountain Sage, Light Mist, Pearl Gray, Gray Slate, Boothbay Blue, Evening Blue, Deep Ocean, Aged Pewter, Night Gray, Iron Gray, Countrylane Red and Midnight Black. Through us, all 19 are offered on Hardie Plank, Panel, Shingle and Trim Batten boards; Hardie Trim carries 10 of them and Hardie Soffit 5. The Dream Collection of roughly 700 made to order finishes is available in the United States only. Iron Gray is the 2026 Colour of the Year.
- What is the difference between HZ5 and HZ10 James Hardie siding?
- They are two formulations of the same product family, and geography makes the choice rather than preference. HZ10 is built for hot, humid, high UV conditions. HZ5 is built for climates with seasonal temperature swings, freezing temperatures, snow and ice, which is the northern United States and Canada. HZ5 lap siding is also cut to a different profile, with a sloped top that sheds water to the outer face of the lap and a bullnose drip edge at the bottom. Everything that ships into Ontario is HZ5. If a quote does not say HZ5, ask why.
- Does James Hardie make board and batten siding?
- Yes, as two products used together: Hardie Panel, the 4 ft. wide vertical panel, and Hardie Trim Batten boards, 2 1/2 in. wide, fastened over the panel joints and at an even spacing between them. Both come in all 19 ColorPlus colours, so they can match exactly or contrast.
- Is Hardie board better than vinyl siding?
- It is a different trade rather than a straight upgrade, and the honest answer depends on the wall and the budget. Fibre cement is noncombustible, holds a factory baked finish, and carries a 30 year substrate warranty. Against that, it is far heavier to handle, it has to be cut with dust control, installed labour costs more, and a damaged board is a harder repair than a vinyl panel you can unzip and swap. Vinyl is still the right call on a budget re side where the wall is sheltered and the schedule is tight. Our fibre cement vs vinyl comparison prices both over 30 years of ownership.
- What warranty does James Hardie provide?
- Two separate warranties, and they are easy to conflate. The substrate warranty (HS2401) covers the siding, trim, soffit, Artisan and Architectural Panels for 30 years in Canada outside the territories, reimbursing up to twice the original retail cost of a defective portion in any year, though not labour, and it transfers once. The ColorPlus Technology finish carries a separate 15 year limited warranty that reduces by 6.67 percent a year after the first. We supply the documents with the quote on any Hardie job.
- Is James Hardie siding approved under the Canadian building code?
- The siding is. Hardie Plank, Panel, Shingle and both Artisan profiles are evaluated under CCMC Evaluation Report 12678-R, held by James Hardie Building Products, Inc., first issued in 1995 and last modified on 21 October 2025, and assessed against the National Building Code 2015 and 2020; earlier editions cited Ontario Ruling 95-17-36. The trim, soffit, Architectural Panel and Architectural Trim are not part of it. Read the report's conditions before you frame: Hardie Panel and Artisan Lock Joint require a drained and vented air space at least 10 mm deep behind them.
