The reveals that make the Architectural Panel grid

Hardie™ Architectural Trim

Hardie™ Architectural Trim is the aluminum extrusion system for Hardie® Architectural Panel: corner trims, vertical Y and H joint trims, horizontal Z trims, J and transition trims, and base trims, all 10 ft. long. It forms the slim reveals that make the panel grid.

About Hardie™ Architectural Trim

Hardie™ Architectural Trim is the aluminum extrusion system for Hardie® Architectural Panel: corner trims, vertical Y and H joint trims, horizontal Z trims, J and transition trims, and base trims, all 10 ft. long. It forms the slim reveals that make the panel grid.

Hardie Architectural Trim is the aluminum half of the Architectural Collection. Hardie Architectural Panel is laid out as a grid, and these extrusions are what make the grid: the slim corner trims at inside and outside corners, the vertical Y and H trims at the vertical panel joints, the horizontal Z trims at the horizontal joints, J and 2-piece J trims at openings and edges, transition trims where panel meets lap siding, and base trims that give the bottom of the wall a clean reveal or act as a starter. James Hardie groups them four ways, corner, joint and end, transition and base, and every piece is 10 feet long.

It is worth being clear about how much is documented. James Hardie's dealer system lists ten sizes across the four groups for Ontario, while the product page shows sixteen profile names, and no document we could find says which size belongs to which name, so we confirm the exact profile against your drawings when you order. The only installation guidance is inside the US Architectural Panel instructions: fasten with a staple, finish nail or flat head nail and never a button or bugle head, cut with an 80-tooth non-ferrous blade, and put a membrane between the aluminum and any preservative-treated wood. There is no Canadian document, fire listing or warranty that names the trim.

Available at Pro Materials in Newmarket, Ontario, supplying contractors, builders, and homeowners across York Region, the GTA, Simcoe County and Durham Region. All products are available on a quote basis; contact us for wholesale pricing and current availability.

Installation Guide

Critical Installation Rules

  1. No Canadian instructions exist. These points are from James Hardie's US Architectural Panel requirements (HS20110, July 2024)

  2. Fasten trims to wood with a staple, finish nail or flat head nail. Do not use button head or bugle head fasteners

  3. Install inside corner trims first, set panels into them, and slide the outside corner trim behind the last panel before the final row of nails

  4. Vertical orientation: a Y or H trim at every vertical joint, which James Hardie treats as part of the water management

  5. Horizontal joints: low-profile Z trim or Z flashing trim, at least 1/4 in. clearance and a 1/16 in. gap between Z flashing pieces with a continuous sealant bead

  6. Windows: the 2-piece J trim with caulk and Z flashing. James Hardie does not recommend plain J trim at windows and doors

  7. Cut with a mitre saw and an 80-tooth non-ferrous metal blade. Use tin snips for flashings

  8. Where the trim meets preservative-treated wood, install a non-permeable membrane between them, and use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless fasteners

Storage & Handling

  • Cut the trims with a mitre saw and an 80-tooth non-ferrous metal blade. The silica dust precautions apply to cutting the fibre cement panels, not the aluminum trim

Hardie™ Architectural Trim: Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hardie Architectural Trim made of?
Aluminum. James Hardie describes the profiles as aluminum extrusions and calls them metal trims. It is the metal trim system for Hardie® Architectural Panel, not fibre cement like Hardie® Trim.
Which Architectural Trim profiles do I need?
It depends on the layout. In a vertical layout every vertical panel joint needs a Y or H trim, every horizontal joint a Z trim, and every corner a corner trim. Openings take 2-piece J, the base takes a raised reveal or L base, and anywhere the panel meets lap siding takes a transition trim. Send us your elevations and we will confirm each profile and size against James Hardie's list before you order.
Can I use Hardie Architectural Trim with other siding?
The transition trims are made for exactly that: moving from Architectural Panel to lap siding, at inside corners, outside corners and vertical joints. For the rest, the trims are sized for the 5/16 in. Architectural Panel.
