About Hardie® Artisan® Trim

Hardie® Artisan® Trim is James Hardie's 1 1/2 in. thick smooth fibre cement trim, in 3 1/2 in. and 5 1/2 in. widths and 12 ft. lengths, primed for paint. It is proportioned for 5/8 in. Artisan® siding so window surrounds and corners still stand proud of the wall.

Hardie Artisan Trim is the heavy trim. At 1 1/2 inches thick it is half again as thick as a 1 inch 5/4 Hardie Trim board, which is what it takes to stand proud of 5/8 inch Artisan siding and keep the shadow line around a window or at a corner in proportion with the siding. It comes in one smooth face, in 3 1/2 and 5 1/2 inch widths, the 4 and 6 inch boards, 12 feet long and primed for paint, so it takes the same 100% acrylic topcoat as the Artisan boards beside it.

There is less James Hardie paperwork behind this product in Canada than behind anything else in the range, and we would rather say so. No Canadian document covers it: it is not in the HZ5 Canada Best Practice Guide, the Canadian trim instructions or CCMC 12678-R. James Hardie's installation guidance is a US document written for Artisan Lap, which is not sold here, and it calls for 2 1/2 inch 16 gauge finish nails into wood, trim tabs for concealed fastening, and flashing over every horizontal trim. The product page advertises a 30-year warranty, but the warranty document itself names Hardie Trim HZ5 boards and Hardie Artisan, not Artisan Trim. If the warranty matters to your job, we will get James Hardie's answer in writing before you order.

Installation Guide

Critical Installation Rules

  1. No Canadian instructions exist. These points are from James Hardie's US Artisan Lap and Trim instructions (HS2410, July 2024)

  2. Wood framing: 2 1/2 in. minimum 16 ga finish nails. Steel: ET&F fasteners or screws

  3. Finish nails at least 1/2 in. from edges, other fasteners 3/4 in., at least 1 in. from ends and a maximum 16 in. apart

  4. Join corners with a 22.5° to 45° weather cut, with seams turned away from the street

  5. Flashing over all horizontal protruding trim, with a 1/4 in. uncaulked gap above it. Leave a 1/8 in. caulked gap between siding and side trim

  6. Fasteners must be corrosion resistant. Hot-dipped galvanized is recommended, and stainless steel near the ocean, large bodies of water or in very humid conditions

  7. Drive fasteners perpendicular and snug. Do not over drive, under drive or angle them, and do not use aluminum fasteners, staples to the wall, or clipped head nails

  8. James Hardie's installation videos are filmed for the United States. Where a video and the Canadian HZ5® instructions differ, the Canadian instructions govern

Storage & Handling

  • Store flat, dry and covered, in the original packaging on a pallet off the ground. Add a waterproof cover outdoors
  • Carry pieces on edge and protect the edges and corners. Do not roll or dump the load off the truck
  • Installing product that is wet or saturated can cause shrinkage at the joints. If it gets soaked, lay it flat and let it dry completely first
  • Caulk, paint or prime every field cut edge
  • Paint primed product within 180 days of installation. A 100% acrylic topcoat is recommended; back-roll if it is sprayed
  • Do not use stain, oil or alkyd based paint, or powder coating. Do not paint product that is wet
  • Sealant: elastomeric to ASTM C920 Grade NS Class 25 or higher, or latex to ASTM C834, per NBC 9.27.4
  • Cut outdoors. The best method is a circular saw with a HardieBlade® and vacuum dust collection. Never power cut indoors, and never dry sweep the dust
  • Fibre cement dust contains respirable crystalline silica. Use dust control and follow your provincial occupational health and safety rules

How to install Hardie Artisan Lap siding and Artisan Trim (James Hardie, US)

Questions a spec sheet cannot answer

Each one opens the section of our guides that answers it for Hardie® Artisan® Trim and the products beside it on the shelf.

Hardie® Artisan® Trim: Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Hardie Artisan Trim 1 1/2 inches thick?
Because Artisan® siding is 5/8 in. thick, twice the depth of Hardie® Plank. James Hardie's US instructions say Artisan® Lap siding needs 1 1/2 in. trim for proper proportions. The Lock Joint profiles sold here share the same 5/8 in. thickness, so the same logic applies: the trim still reads as a raised frame instead of sitting nearly flush.
Does Hardie Artisan Trim come in ColorPlus colours?
No. In Ontario it is primed only, in 3 1/2 and 5 1/2 in. widths, and painted on site with the Artisan® siding.
Is Hardie Artisan Trim covered by the 30-year warranty?
James Hardie's product page says it carries a 30-year limited warranty, but the warranty document (HS2401) names Hardie® Trim HZ5® boards and Hardie® Artisan HZ5® siding, not Artisan® Trim. If the warranty matters to your project, ask us and we will get James Hardie's written confirmation before you order.
