Board and Batten

Board and Batten by MAC Metal Architectural brings the timeless charm of farmhouse-style vertical siding to pre-painted galvanized steel. Part of The Farmhouse Series, it combines a classic raised-batten profile with the TEXTURAL IV matte wood-grain paint system — 3 unique plank variations per colour in every box — for a wall finish that looks hand-crafted but installs with the speed and durability of steel. No exposed screws, no seasonal maintenance, and a 40-year limited warranty on the finish.

Installation Guide

  1. Wood Collection panels come in 3 plank variations per colour (#7, #8, #9 stamped on the back). Install in random order — never repeat the same sequence to avoid a wallpaper effect.

  2. Store panels indoors in a dry, flat, well-ventilated area. If outdoor storage is necessary: elevate panels ~6" off the ground for air circulation, raise one end so water can drain off, and cover with a breathable tarp — never plastic, as it causes condensation.

  3. Do NOT install over ZIP System Insulated R-Sheathing or similar soft dual-composite panels — insufficient rigidity causes warping and oil canning under sun exposure.

  4. Remove the protective film from each panel BEFORE installing any trims or sheets — film trapped behind trims during assembly cannot be removed without disassembly.

  5. Install drip flashing (M50H) first, behind the furring strips and weather barrier. Then install the Starting Strip (M17H) above the drip flashing, leaving a 1/8" gap for water drainage.

  6. It is strongly recommended to install on double furring strips — one vertical layer first, then a horizontal layer — at 16" or 24" o.c., in accordance with local building codes.

  7. Board and Batten panels are installed vertically only. The Reverse Board and Batten (RBB) can also be installed horizontally (special order).

  8. To install each panel, insert the male edge into the female edge from top to bottom, then fasten with MAC screws every 16"–24". Verify there is always 10" between battens as you go.

  9. Fasten screws with moderate contact only — do not overtighten. Screws must not exert upward or downward pressure on the panel, as this will cause deformation.

  10. To cut a panel to width at a wall end or trim: cut 3/4" wider than the required dimension, then fold that 3/4" at 90° toward the exterior of the wall. In wind-exposed locations, add a bead of sealant behind the folded edge. Add Batten Trim Filler (M06H) inside the J-Trim for a finished batten-effect termination.

  11. Cut panels with the MAC Board and Batten cutter, metal snips, electric shears, or a cold-cut rotary saw with a metal blade. Hot-cut tools (angle grinders, standard circular saws) leave metal particles that damage the finish and void the warranty.

  12. Notify your supplier before installing more than 180 sq. ft. (2 boxes) if any product issue is discovered during installation to ensure warranty coverage is preserved.
