Gutter Guards in Ontario: Pick for the Tree First, Then the Gutter
Key points
- Alu-Rex's dual-layer guards carry a lifetime clog-free warranty that includes conifers; its single-layer guards exclude clogging caused by conifers
- Single-layer clog-free cover is prorated: 100% for 10 years, 50% to year 20, 10% to year 25
- A single-layer Alu-Rex guard still drains 12.6 inches of water per hour per foot with 80% of its holes blocked

It is tempting to compare gutter guards by their holes: mesh against perforated, fine against coarse. In Ontario that gets the order backwards. Look up first. If there is a pine, spruce or fir anywhere near the roof, the question that decides the order is not the size of the holes but whether the manufacturer's clog-free warranty still pays when the clog is made of needles. Two of the guards we stock say no in writing, and three say yes for life.
This guide sorts the seven gutter guards on our shelf by that question, then by the gutter they go on, then by what the warranty asks of the installer. If you are still choosing the eavestrough itself, start with our eavestrough guide for Ontario homes, which covers aluminum against vinyl and 5 inch against 6 inch, then come back here for the guard.
Start With the Tree: Which Gutter Guards Hold Up Under Pines?
Under conifers, buy a dual-layer guard. Alu-Rex's DoublePro, Hover Pro and Gutter Clean Pro carry a lifetime clog-free warranty written to include coniferous areas, while its single-layer T-Rex and Gutter Clean System list clogging caused by conifers as an exclusion. The holes look alike from the ground; the warranty wording does not.
Watch: the warranty timeline drawn year by year, water running through single- and dual-layer guards, the seven guards sorted by tree and gutter, and Alu-Rex's drainage, wind and load tests. That matters here more than most places. The eastern white pine is Ontario's provincial tree, and the province describes it growing across all of Ontario except the Far North, with thin needles 6 to 12 centimetres long that grow in bunches of five. Alu-Rex's dual-layer guards put a slotted second layer under the perforated top sheet, offset so the holes do not line up, and Alu-Rex says that offset is what blocks pine needles. Among the Alu-Rex guards we carry, they are also the only ones whose warranty is written to cover conifers.
Picture a homeowner in Newmarket with a white pine over the back eave and a maple out front. A single-layer guard on that house is covered for the maple leaves and not for the pine needles, which are the one clog its warranty excludes by name.
Years since installation
| Case | Coverage by year |
|---|---|
| DoublePro, Hover Pro, Gutter Clean Pro, Dual layer, leaves and conifer needles | years 0 to 30: 100%; continues for life |
| T-Rex, Gutter Clean System, Single layer, leaves and small branches | years 0 to 10: 100%; years 10 to 20: 50%; years 20 to 25: 10% |
| T-Rex, Gutter Clean System, Single layer, clogging caused by conifers | Excluded at every age |
Percentage of the guard's purchase price, or of the labour cost to clear a clog, that Alu-Rex is responsible for. Lifetime terms run to the owner at the time of installation and transfer once with the property. The arrow means the coverage does not end.
The proration on the single-layer guards is the second thing the headline hides. "25-year clog-free" pays in full for the first 10 years, half from year 10 to year 20, and a tenth from year 20 to year 25. The dual-layer terms have no schedule at all.
Then the Gutter: New Eavestrough or the One You Already Have?
The gutter guards we stock come in two shapes: hangers that hold up a new gutter and carry the guard in the same piece, and covers that sit on top of a gutter that is staying. Pick the tree first, then pick the shape your gutter allows, and the product falls out of the two answers.
The two questions give four cases. The grid uses the Alu-Rex guards, because they are the ones with a published conifer term:
| Your trees | New eavestrough going up | Existing eavestrough staying |
|---|---|---|
| Pine, spruce or fir nearby | DoublePro, or Hover Pro on a hemmed-back gutter | Gutter Clean Pro |
| Leaves only | Any of the above, or T-Rex | Gutter Clean Pro, or the Gutter Clean System |
A few rules sit underneath that grid:
- DoublePro is a continuous hanger and dual-layer guard in one piece for new 5 and 6 inch gutters, screwed through to the fascia.
- Hover Pro carries the same dual-layer guard but holds the gutter without a single screw through it, so the gutter can expand and contract with temperature. It needs a gutter formed with a hemmed back.
- T-Rex is a single-layer continuous hanger for new 5, 6 and 7 inch gutters, in Mill or Carbon Black.
- Gutter Clean Pro is the dual-layer retrofit: it fits existing 5 and 6 inch gutters with any bracket type and seals against the fascia with a flexible vinyl back strip.
- The Gutter Clean System is the single-layer retrofit, with versions for standard, ZIP, copper and half-round gutters.

The Seven Gutter Guards We Stock, Side by Side
At Pro Materials, we carry five gutter guards from Alu-Rex and two from Kaycan. Every row below comes from the manufacturer's own warranty sheets, spec sheets or product pages.
| Guard | Goes on | Build | Clog-free warranty | Clogs from conifers | Sturdiness warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alu-Rex DoublePro | New 5 or 6 in. gutter, as the hanger | Dual layer, 3105 H24 aluminum | Lifetime | Covered | Lifetime |
| Alu-Rex Hover Pro | New 5 or 6 in. hemmed-back gutter, as a floating hanger | Dual layer, 3105 H24 aluminum | Lifetime | Covered | Lifetime |
| Alu-Rex Gutter Clean Pro | Existing 5 or 6 in. gutter, any bracket | Dual layer plus vinyl back seal | Lifetime | Covered | Not a hanger |
| Alu-Rex T-Rex | New 5, 6 or 7 in. gutter, as the hanger | Single perforated layer | 25 years, prorated | Excluded | Lifetime |
| Alu-Rex Gutter Clean System | Existing standard, ZIP, copper or half-round gutter | Single perforated layer | 25 years, prorated | Excluded | Not a hanger |
| Kaycan Gutter Sentry | New 5 or 6 in. gutter, as hanger and cover | Perforated aluminum, twenty 1/8 in. holes per sq. in. | Not published by Kaycan | Not published | Not published |
| Kaycan ProGuard II | Existing gutters, per Kaycan; 5 in. (a matching ProGuard fits 6 in.) | High tensile strength aluminum | Not published by Kaycan | Not published | Not published |
The two Kaycan rows are thin on purpose. Kaycan's own pages do not publish a warranty term or a drainage rate for either guard, so we do not print one. Ask for the warranty details with your quote.
How Much Water Gets Through a Gutter Guard When It Clogs?
Alu-Rex rates its dual-layer gutter guards at 40.6 inches of water per hour per linear foot on a 5 inch gutter and 49.2 inches on a 6 inch gutter. Its single-layer guards drain 29.7 inches clean, 21.1 inches with half the holes blocked, and 12.6 inches with 80 percent blocked.
The clogged figures are the useful ones, because a guard never works clean for long. Alu-Rex publishes them for the single-layer T-Rex and Gutter Clean System on its independent test results page, which also gives the perforation count behind them: 489 holes every 19 inches.
- Dual layer: DoublePro, Hover Pro, Gutter Clean Pro
- Single layer: T-Rex, Gutter Clean System
Inches of water per hour, per linear foot of gutter
| Reading | Condition | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Dual layer | 6 in. gutter | 49.2 in. |
| Dual layer | 5 in. gutter | 40.6 in. |
| Single layer | Clean holes | 29.7 in. |
| Single layer | 50% of holes blocked | 21.1 in. |
| Single layer | 80% of holes blocked | 12.6 in. |
Dual-layer ratings are the figures on Alu-Rex's 2025 and 2026 spec sheets for DoublePro, Hover Pro and Gutter Clean Pro, identical across the three. Alu-Rex does not publish blocked-hole figures for them, so none are drawn. Blocked-hole readings are Alu-Rex's own test of the T-Rex and Gutter Clean System.
Alu-Rex's wind tests suggest debris does not sit long on its perforated guards. On a 12 inch length of its single-layer guard, Alu-Rex measured that a wind of 8 km/h cleared 20 dried leaves or 200 fir needles, and 10 km/h cleared 20 wet leaves or 100 pine needles. The warranties add the honest caveat: in sheltered roof areas and under overhangs on shallow-pitched roofs, debris collects where the air cannot reach it, and the owner has to clear it now and then.
What Gutter Guard Warranties Ask of the Installer
A warranty is a set of installation rules with a promise attached. These are the conditions in Alu-Rex's warranty sheets that a crew controls on the day, in the order the job meets them:
-
Match the guard to the gutter. Hanger guards (DoublePro, Hover Pro, T-Rex) go on new gutters, and Hover Pro needs a hemmed-back gutter. Gutter Clean Pro and the Gutter Clean System go on top of an existing gutter.
-
Screw hanger guards into the fascia every 24 inches. Alu-Rex's sturdiness warranty on DoublePro, Hover Pro and T-Rex requires the product to be screwed into the fascia board every 24 inches with the self-sealing screws supplied in the box.
-
Seal every gap larger than one perforation. Any opening bigger than a single perforation at overlaps, corners or other locations has to be sealed with screws or sealant, and kept sealed, for the clog-free warranty to apply.
-
Keep the aluminum away from dissimilar materials. Keep the guard out of contact with copper, concrete, stucco, pressure-treated lumber and roofing that contains metallic granules or strips, and out of their run-off, which Alu-Rex warns is likely to cause corrosion.
-
Keep the paperwork for a claim. File the invoice and the installation date, and note the installer's name, address and phone number. A claim asks for all of them plus a photo and a description of the problem.
A continuous hanger guard goes on with the gutter, not after it, so the screw spacing is set on the day.
The fascia is doing the holding on a hanger guard, so check it before the screws go in. Our soffit and fascia installation guide covers what sits behind the eavestrough and how the soffit below it is vented. The warranty also limits what Alu-Rex will pay: the material on a defect, and reasonable labour to clear a clog the product failed to stop, never more than the purchase price of the guard. The gutter itself is not covered by any of them.
Why do hangers matter at all? Alu-Rex's test of the T-Rex measured the weight needed to bend a gutter by one inch, against a traditional install with spaced spikes and hangers:
| Spacing between screws or spikes | Spikes and hangers | T-Rex continuous hanger |
|---|---|---|
| 8 in. | 170 lb | 250 lb |
| 16 in. | 155 lb | 232 lb |
| 24 in. | 140 lb | 214 lb |
At the 24 inch spacing the warranty asks for, the continuous hanger carries about half as much again before the gutter deflects an inch.
Kaycan's Gutter Sentry and ProGuard II, in Kaycan's Words
We carry two of Kaycan's gutter guards, and they are built for different jobs.
Gutter Sentry is made by Custom Metal Products and distributed by Kaycan, which calls it "the ultimate gutter hanger and cover in one" and positions it for a brand new gutter system. The back of the cover snaps over the back of the eavestrough, the front tucks under the front lip, and the assembly is screwed through, with mounting holes every 2.5 inches. The surface carries twenty 1/8 inch holes per square inch. It comes in 5 inch (code GS2025, 210 feet in a carton of 30 pieces) and 6 inch (GS5026, 175 feet in a carton of 25).
Kaycan's brochure says Gutter Sentry has "the highest drainage capacity of any gutter cover on the market today, more than twice that of the competition". It does not publish the test or a rate in inches per hour behind that claim, so we have left Gutter Sentry off the drainage chart rather than guess a number.
ProGuard II is high tensile strength aluminum on a channelled mounting system, which Kaycan says stays out of sight. On its ProGuard and Gutter Sentry page, Kaycan calls ProGuard II "the perfect solution for existing gutter systems" and says it protects against leaves, pine needles, twigs and shingle grit. Kaycan's aluminum rainware product listing offers it for 5 inch gutters in 10 foot and 4 foot lengths (codes 226000 and 226300), with a matching 6 inch ProGuard in the same two lengths (226200 and 226400). Kaycan does not publish a warranty term for it on those pages.
Snow, Ice and the Ontario Roofline
Read the exclusions before you sell a gutter guard as an ice fix. Every Alu-Rex warranty we read excludes damage from excessive snow or ice caused by poor roof ventilation or insulation, and damage from snow or ice sliding off steep roofs or metal roofing. The DoublePro, Hover Pro and T-Rex sheets also recommend removing snow from the roof periodically.
That puts ice where it starts: at the roof and the eave, not at the guard. If a house in York Region or Simcoe County builds ice along the eavestrough every winter, the homeowner should have the soffit venting checked before paying for a guard. Our soffit panels buying guide shows how the vented and solid panels split along an eave, and which cartons to order for each.
On the guard itself, Kaycan says Gutter Sentry turns the gutter into "a complete box design" that resists bending under snow and ice and is "strong enough to support the weight of a ladder pressed upon it". Those are Kaycan's claims; Alu-Rex's load test above is the only published number we have for a continuous hanger.
Where to Buy Gutter Guards in Ontario
Our Newmarket warehouse carries all seven gutter guards in this guide, alongside the Kaycan aluminum and vinyl eavestrough they go on. The full range is on our gutter guards and leaf protection page. For a quote, send the length of eave, the gutter size, whether the gutter is new or staying, and what trees are near the roof; that last answer picks the guard.
We stock both sides of the pine question, so the guard we quote is the one the tree calls for. For a crew re-guttering in Barrie or Bradford, delivery is quoted with the order, and pickup is at the Newmarket counter, open Monday to Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4. We supply the material; Sherak Ltd., our installation partner, lists leaf guard installation among its services across York Region, the GTA and Simcoe County. Our service areas page lists the regions we deliver to.
